WNCC Swing Band Performs with Bluffs Middle School Jazz Band

June 28, 2012

SCOTTSBLUFF, NE - Fire in the Pan Swingers, the swing band at Western Nebraska Community College, will perform with the Bluffs Middle School jazz band in the cafeteria at Bluffs Middle School Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. The performance commemorates Music In Our Schools Month, which is observed every March. These two bands collaborated on a similar event in March 2011.

The performance is free and open to the public. Bluffs Middle School jazz band will perform first, followed by Fire in the Pan Swingers. To conclude the evening, both bands will combine on three tunes.

Michael Koch, Bluffs Middle School band director, has played lead trumpet in Fire in the Pan Swingers for more than a decade. Mr. Koch was also the middle-level instrumental music coordinator for the Nebraska Music Educators Association from 2007 to 2008.

"It was Mr. Koch's idea to do this last year," said Dr. Nathaniel Johnson, bands director at WNCC. "It was a big hit with both groups, a very positive experience all around."

Johnson said he was confident as the final note was being played last year that the event would be repeated this year.

"Bluffs Middle School students are great to work with. They always come in well prepared and they really love playing."

Fire in the Pan Swingers will also be performing at the Fourth Annual Jump, Jive and Swing April 29 at the Gering Civic Center. Tickets are currently on sale at the WNCC Business Office, 308.635.6020. They will also be featured at the Spring Bands Concert April 14 in the WNCC Theatre.
