WNCC must ensure that precious financial aid dollars go to eligible students who are fulfilling their obligations to receive those funds. Both the college and the aid recipient share the responsibility to make this happen. Please read and keep this information. It contains important information about the dates and processes that need to be known in order to receive funds.
How are grants and scholarships disbursed?
Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Nebraska Opportunity Grants and any other grants or scholarships will be posted directly to the student's account if you meet the following criteria:
- You are registered for the required number of credit hours to qualify for your aid,
- Your financial aid is not suspended,
- You are in an approved program of study.
The student MUST attend classes to be financial aid eligible. Attendance rosters are completed online by your instructors and attendance will be confirmed before financial aid checks are released.
If financial aid funds exceed direct WNCC charges, the remaining amount will be available in the form of a check in the Scottsbluff Business Office or at the Sidney or Alliance campuses, depending on which is the student's home campus.
Financial aid will NOT be adjusted for enrollment changes occurring after the census date, which is usually during the third week of the fall or spring semester, (except in the case of complete withdrawals).
When will I get my money?
Students who have received award letters from the Financial Aid Office by the start of the semester and who meet all other eligibility requirements should have checks available on the first disbursement date (see Cost & Aid page for dates). No funds will be released before this date for any reason.
Financial aid disbursements will continue throughout the semester as eligibility is determined and aid is processed. Checks are typically available on Fridays, within two weeks of the student's award letter.
Where do I pick up my financial aid checks?
Checks can be available at any one of our three sites (Scottsbluff Business Office, Sidney or Alliance). Contact the Business Office at 308-635-6020 or firstname.lastname@example.org to make other arrangements.
How are loans disbursed?
If the student indicated on their FAFSA that they were interested in Federal Direct Student Loans, the award letter indicates the amount of subsidized loan for which the student is eligible. The student must also submit a signed loan application to the Financial Aid office indicating the amount they wish to accept and complete an online Master Promissory Note in order to receive loan funds. Unsubsidized loan funds require an additional written request.
First-time borrowers at WNCC must complete Entrance Loan Counseling online in order for the loan to be certified. Allow about 30 minutes to complete the entrance interview. Upon completion, an e-mail notice will be sent to the WNCC Financial Aid Office. Students are also encouraged to print the confirmation page that displays when the interview is finished.
Loan disbursement dates are the same as for grants except for first-year, first-time borrowers. If a student has never had a student loan before and is a freshman at WNCC, the loan check will not become available to you until after 30 days from the first date of the semester.
All loans must be disbursed in two equal payments. If you requested a spring semester loan rather than an academic year loan (fall/spring), the second portion of your loan will not be available until after the mid-point of the spring semester.
You will be notified via your WNCC e-mail when your loan funds have been disbursed to your account. You may choose to cancel all or part of your loan within 14 days of disbursement notification. (Please activate your e-mail account from your MyWNCC Portal to receive this information.)
What is Federal Work Study?
Federal Work Study is an employment program funded by the federal government and WNCC. It provides students with part-time jobs to help meet the cost of education. Jobs pay at least minimum wage and generally average 10 hours per week.
Advantages of this program include:
- A variety of jobs are available with some involving community service,
- Federal Work Study income does not affect financial aid eligibility for next year,
- Valuable work experience gained,
- Avoid student loan debt by working to pay for education.
How do I apply for Federal Work Study?
The Financial Aid Office does not place students into specific positions. It is up to the student to check on job availability and to complete paperwork. Employees also need one to two forms of identification for completion of the I-9 form.
Even if a student has previously had a work study job, they will need to complete a new contract before beginning work each school year.
- Students are not allowed to work during scheduled class times.
Time entry is completed online to ensure accuracy and that students are not working during class time. Students are paid twice a month (on the 15th and 30th) for the previous two weeks. Paychecks may be picked up in the Scottsbluff Business Office or the Sidney or Alliance campus.
Federal Work Study earnings generally cannot exceed the amount listed in the award letter or contract. Students must make sure to inform their supervisors of this amount. The student and their supervisor should monitor hours and wages to ensure the student does not exceed the allowable limit.
Academic progress for financial aid
To be eligible for most financial aid programs, students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 and progress through their educational program at a pace of 70% or higher. Certain scholarships have more stringent criteria. Students should be sure to seek advising and support services to ensure you are on track to complete your degree in a reasonable time frame.
- If the student will be receiving assistance that is not included on the award letter, they must notify the Financial Aid Office immediately.
- If students wish to decline any of the financial aid offered, including Federal Work Study, they should notify the Financial Aid Office.
- If financial aid does not cover the full amount of charges, the balance must be paid by the date established by the WNCC Business Office. Students are not allowed to enroll for the following semester until any balance is paid in full.
- Financial aid recipients who withdraw from all their classes may be required to repay a portion of the funds they received for that term. Federal regulations specify the calculation that must be done to determine if and how much of a repayment is required.
