With Jessie McNabb,
Davidson, Saskatchewan, Canada

WNCC sophomore
Jessie McNabb set several records last season for the Cougar
softball team. In November, the shortstop from Davidson,
Saskatchewan, Canada, signed with Division 1 University of Northern
Colorado after graduating from WNCC in May. Here is a one-on-one
conversation with the talented McNabb.
Q:
Why did you decide to sign with Northern Colorado?
A: Because it is not that much farther
from home, so I will still have a car and still drive. Plus, my
parents will still be able to come and see me. I also liked the
coaches a lot.
Q:
What did you like about the campus?
A: I
liked the field and I liked the smaller classes.
Q:
What were some of the things that led you to sign
early?
A: I was
just talking to them and the coaches seemed really nice and told me
that if I work hard, I should get to play.
Q:
You got the signing out early, too?
A: I am
glad it is done with because now I can focus on my playing for this
year
Q:
What other schools were you looking at or
contacted you?
A: There
were some in North Carolina, South Carolina, Minnesota, North
Dakota, South Dakota. There was also one in West Virginia that was
kind of big in West Virginia Wesleyan. Also, Wingate in North
Carolina.
Q:
Were they the only one that made an offer to you?
A: No. I had a few offers. It was
there that I decided to go.
Q:
Did you ever think you would play Division I
softball coming from Canada?
A: No. I
really didn’t know what schools I was going to until I started
looking up schools. It is just a bonus.
Q:
Has coach helped you to try to get to a four-year
school?
A: She
has helped me a lot. She is the one that got me in contact with all
these schools. She also told me about these schools and coaches.
This coach is one of her friends.
Q:
How much have you improved your softball skills
coming from high school down to here?
A: I have
improved them a lot. I have never been taught how to hit before. I
came here and she taught me to hit her way and it seems to be
working.
Q:
Have you been pretty impressed of how your
hitting has come around?
A: It is
nice.
Q:
You have had a couple of home runs since you came
down here? Do you consider yourself a homerun hitter?
A: No.
Q:
Have they told you where you are going to play
next year at UNC?
A:
Shortstop
Q:
Do you like playing shortstop or third base?
A: I like
shortstop a lot better.
Q:
What is the goal for the spring season here at
WNCC?
A: To win
regionals.
Q:
What will it take?
A: It
will take a lot of teamwork and everybody coming together to work as
a team.
Q:
What was it like knowing that you beat them
[Otero] once at the regional tournament and came within one game of
winning regionals?
A: It was
nice and it is a big bonus for this year knowing that we are capable
of beating them. We just have to play good.
Q:
What is it like playing down here in the states?
A: I like
it. It is more intense. People care more of how you do.
Q:
Is it hard being away from your family and
friends?
A: It is
not that bad because I still see them quite a bit, like they come
see me or I go see them.
Q:
Do they come down here a lot?
A: My parents have been down here
twice now this year. Then I went home for Thanksgiving.
Q:
How far of a trip is it to go back home?
A: It is
14 hours and I am just straight up in Saskatchewan.
Q:
You have other players from Saskatchewan here to?
A: There
are four of us now. It is nice to know people before I even came
down here. The people I have met is like I have known them forever.
Q:
You already hold a lot of records, has that been
a surprise?
A: That
just came. I really wasn’t looking at breaking anything. It just
happened. Hopefully I can do it again this year.
Q:
What has been some of the fun parts so far, not
just playing but also going to school?
A: I
think the people that I have met including some from last year that
have gone on to other schools. We still keep in touch. Also, the
success that everybody else brings.
Q:
What are some of the most memorable things that
you have done together as a team?
A:
Probably last year when we got stuck in Texas because our bus broke
down. That was interesting.
Q:
Do you do a lot of stuff outside of softball as a
team?
A: We do
quite a bit. We hang out a lot. |
