With Bre Perkes, women's soccer player from Fremont, Utah

Bre Perkes, a sophomore, has undergone many obstacles in her playing days at WNCC. As a freshman, Perkes set the school record for most goals in a season with 26. This season, Perkes battled injuries, including an ACL injury that limited her playing time. Still, Perkes provided plenty of highlights during her two years. Here is a one-on-one interview with the school’s record holder.

Q: How did the season go?
A:
Season went alright. It was much better then last year. We had a better record and it is nice having more players top play.

Q: For you, you had to deal with a lot of injuries this year. What was it like dealing with all that?
A: it was difficult coming back from my ACL injury. i came back sooner then I expected, which made me sorer a lot more. And having to play with a brace is not fun either.

Q: What is it like to go through an ACL injury?
A: It was not fun at all. When I tore it over spring break playing soccer, it hurt. Then I left school to go for my surgery. it takes awhile before it actually feels alright. I also had a problem of tearing my hamstring because I had a hamstring graf and all summer long I spent rehabbing.

Q: How much rehabbing did you do?
A: I did it three times a week all summer long. I also had to do my own exercises at home three times a day.

Q:So, you don’t want to go through that again?
A: No. I am still rehabbing now. It is not fun.

Q: You have spent two years here playing soccer, what has it been like playing soccer at WNCC?
A: It was not what I expected. This is a small school, which my high school is bigger then this. It was a little bit more competitive in high school then it is right know. But it was fun while it lasted.

Q: What are your plans after this year? Are you hoping to play soccer someplace?
A: i am still looking to play soccer some place. I really haven’t decided where. There are several different schools.

Q: You are also a RA (Resident Assistant at the dorms. What is that like?
A: It is interesting and it is different. Sometimes you are put into situations that you don’t want to be in. But, it is alright.

Q: Do you enjoy it?
A: Sometimes. Sometimes the work is stressful especially during soccer season because you had soccer practice, RA training. You had a lot of different things.

Q: What have been some of the best soccer matches that you have played in?
A: It is hard say. I think the best soccer matches I played in were last year just because this year I was hurt the whole season.

Q: What are some of the funniest things that has happened to the team this year?
A: The funniest thing that happened was we were in Kansas in a very bad hotel and we had this lady knocking on one of our teammates’ door asking for money and they were calling us out. The hotel was bad and scary.

Q: Anything funny about coach?
A: We always tease coach because he always has his top 10 things he always says to us. He always tells us one of his quotes and we ask him if it is a top 10 quote.

Q: How did you start playing soccer?
A: It was more of a family thing. All my cousins played back home. My aunt, dad, mom and everyone played when they were little. I played when I was really little and I started playing in leagues when I was four.

Q: If you didn’t play soccer, what sport would you be playing?
A: When I was little, I was playing basketball and soccer. it is hard but maybe basketball. i think I enjoy that one a lot more then the others. That and the fact I can’t hit a softball worth crap.

Q: Hobbies?
A: Back home fishing and hiking. We always hike up to the waterfalls. With all the snow in the wintertime, snowmobiling. With the lakes, boating.

Q: Everybody thinks that people from Utah are all Morman. Are you Morman?
A: No I am not. A lot of people think the majority are Morman, but it is not. People don’t realize it is not the main thing.

Q: Favorite Food?
A: I like all different types. There is one restaurant back home and it is a Japanese Cruisine. It is really good.

Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what two things would you take?
A: I would take someone with me because I couldn’t stand to be along. Then something to help me get off because I don’t like being stranded in spot very long.

Q: You are from a populated area in Utah, right?
A: Where my town is, it is not populated. but if you drive 10 minutes, you are in a bigger town.

Q: What was it like going from that area to Nebraska, where everything is scattered?
A: It is weird. The number one thing is you are used to looking at the mountains back home and it helped me now which direction I was going. There is also so much stuff to do. I am 45 minutes from Salt Lake City, which has a lot of stuff to do.

Q: We have the Monument as a mountain?
A:
That is not even close (she said with a laugh). That is a pile of rocks, yes (she said light-heartedly).
