Chris Green
Head Volleyball Coach
High school graduated/year: Gering, 1985

High school sports: Cross country

College(s) attended/year: Nebraska at Lincoln, 1987-91

College sports/activities/honors: Club volleyball, FCA

Outside sporting accomplishments: Doubles volleyball where he had many wins at the Cornhusker State Games and various other tournaments. He also won the AAA Jose Cuevo double volleyball in 1998 in Hawaii.

Previous coaching stops: Gering (1991), Battle Creek (1992-93), Kauai, Hawaii (1995-98).

Why do you enjoy coaching this sport: "First of all, I enjoyed playing volleyball. I think it is a great strategic sport for coaches. It is enjoyable to mold a team."

What makes coaching fun: "To see the improvement in the players is always the most fun. Also the interaction between the whole team is usually fun."

Why is wncc a good fit for you: "Not only do I get to coach, but I also have the chance to teach math, which is possible only at a junior college."

What are your most gratifying accomplishments while coaching: "Beating Waimea High, while I was coaching Hawaii. It was the first loss they ever had on the island of Kauai in 20-plus years. Also each of the Region IX championships, especially the 2004 season because we didn't have the most talented team, but we did have the hardest working team."

Outlook for this season: "We will be very young but we have some great ball control. I think we will be a great defensive team. Offensively, we will hopefully improve throughout the season."

What makes a good coach: "Knowledge of the game is an important beginning. A good coach is always trying to learn new things. Love of the game is also a very important factor in being a good coach."

What is the worst part of coaching: "The struggle in recruiting good athletes to a junior college."

Amy Winters
Assistant Volleyball Coach
High school graduated/year: Sidney High School, 1987

High school sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Track

High school sports highlights: "I didn't play sports until my senior year. I came off the bench in volleyball to serve. I jump served and then when the opposing team got a side-out, I went back to the bench. That was my role on the team and I accepted it. I wanted to be a part of the team and so I worked hard to be the best at jump serving. When I was in high school, there weren't many jump servers like there are now so it was kind of a big thing. I still have some newspaper articles that had write-ups about me in them. Anyway, it paid off because it got me a scholarship to go play volleyball in Mitchell, S.D.

Other high school activities/honors: Senior class treasurer, honor society, math club

College(s) attended/year: Dakota Wesleyan University (1 Yr), Western Nebraska C.C. and Chadron State.

College sports/activities/honors: Amy played volleyball at Dakota Wesleyan in 1987-88 and started. Then, she didn't go back after her freshmen year because her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer

Other sporting accomplishments: "I still play volleyball when I can. We go down to Colorado and play 4-man coed indoor tournaments. We have won several in the past. I was also named one of the Star Herald's top 10 sports people in 2002."

Outside coaching highlights/organizations: West Nebraska All Star Committee for volleyball and football, club volleyball coach for the last 6 years, President of the WNCC Cougar Club, United Way Special Events Committee, Project Extra Mile.

Why do you enjoy coaching this sport: "I love the game of volleyball. I enjoy being around the players and also working with Chris because he has such a great knowledge of the game. I have learned a lot from working with him the last 2 years."

What makes coaching fun: "Winning sure helps but also being around the players."

Why is WNCC a good fit for you: "I enjoy the people at WNCC. We have a lot of support from the fans. I believe that our Cougar volleyball host families are the best and I appreciate everything they do for our program. The faculty and staff are also very supportive. I have made so many friendships because of my involvement at WNCC."

Most gratifying accomplishments while coaching: "The friendships that are established after 2 years of working with the players. I also get a great deal of satisfaction seeing individual and team improvement from the beginning of the season to the season."

What makes a good coach: "Knowledge of the game is very important. A good coach should strive to learn the best technique for every aspect of the game and then teach those techniques. A good coach also cares about the players on the team and wants them to succeed academically."
